Weathering Steel Coil
Weathering steel is a kind of steel that resists corrosion but is not rust-proof. This steel alloy is widely used in landscaping and other outdoor applications because it forms a protective layer of rust after approximately six months of exposure to moisture and oxygen. Since the rust layer (patina) protects the steel from further corrosion, it does not require painting or additional weatherproofing.
What effect does weathering have on steel?
Weathering steel will rust, however, it will only rust on the outer surface. The rust does not penetrate deeper into weathering steel once the outer layer of rust has formed. The surface layer of rust acts as a barrier and actually protects the steel from further corrosion.
Is weathering steel corrosion resistant?
The basic metallurgical difference between weathering steel and ordinary structural steel is the addition of chromium, copper and nickel alloying elements, which give the weathering steel its enhanced resistance to corrosion.
