Advantages of duplex stainless steel

Strength: Duplex stainless steels are approximately twice as strong as ordinary austenitic or ferritic stainless steels.
Toughness and ductility: The toughness and ductility of duplex stainless steels exceed those of ferritic stainless steels, although they are not as good as austenitic stainless steels.

Heat Resistance: Duplex stainless steels have higher thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than austenitic steels. Duplex steels can easily be used at temperatures of at least -50°C, as they have better ductility than ferritic steels at low temperatures.

Advantages of duplex stainless steel

Corrosion resistance: As with all stainless steels, corrosion resistance depends largely on the composition of the stainless steel, with chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content being the most important. Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant and exhibit very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), even in chloride and sulfide environments.SCC is a type of corrosion that occurs in the presence of a specific set of factors: tensile stress, corrosive environment, and sufficiently high temperatures.

Cost: Duplex stainless steels have lower nickel and molybdenum content than austenitic stainless steels. This lower alloy content means that the cost of duplex stainless steels can be lower. In addition to this, the thickness of duplex stainless steel can be reduced because it has an increased yield strength. Thinner products mean that weight can be significantly reduced.
Weldability: Duplex stainless steels tend to have good weldability and can be used with all standard welding processes, although they are not as easy to weld as austenitic stainless steels.
